This details the contracts placed for Shackletons with A.V. Roe & Co Ltd, the serials allocated, contract changes and individual histories of the aircraft built, with particular reference to trials usage, operational service, unit codes and major modifications.

WR970 MR 3

First flown 2.9.55 and ToC by Controller (Aircraft) for development trials by Avro at Woodford. Allotted to A&AEE for handling trials 7.9.56 and officially handed over to MoS at Boscombe Down 8.9.56. although still in the hands of Avro until 14.9.56. Flight trials by A&AEE unsatisfactory and WR970 was returned to Avro (at Boscombe) for additional testing against Contract 6/Acft/12782/CB6(a). Ferried to Woodford 28.11.56 for further stall-warning development, during which the aircraft crashed at Foolow, Derbyshire, 7.12.56. SoC Cat.5(Scrap) 28.11.57.

WR971 MR 3

First flown 28.5.56. Retained by Avro for development work until 12.12.56, when allocated for C(A) Release for armament trials. Delivered to A&AEE Boscombe Down 14.12.56. Following crash of WR970 was used by Avro for development work, but remained officially on C(A) charge. Handling and armament trails, the latter including bombing and container drops on Imber Range, were completed by the A&AEE before the aircraft was allotted to Avro Woodford for refurbishing and modification to full production standard against Contract 6/Acft/l2873/ CB6(a). Arrived at Woodford 12.5.58 and from 14.6.58 was used for aerial development against Contract 6/Acft/13036/CB6(a). On completion 17.10.58 WR971 was transferred to Contract 6/Acft/ 14156/CB24(c) for update to Phase I standard and briefly used for more CLE dropping trials before being finally delivered to the RAF 7.10.60. Allotted to 206 Sqn, but actually delivered to 120 Sqn and coded E. To Avro for Phase Il modernization 4.62, returning to 120 Sqn 22.5.62, still as E. To HSA Langar for Phase III conversion 9.63 - 4.65 when issued to 201 Sqn as P. Viper fit and repairs completed by HSA Langar 11.66 - 6.67 before transfer to the Kinloss Wing 23.6.67 as Q. At HSA Bitteswell for mods 6.8.68 - 7.10.68, returning to Kinloss still as Q. To 60MU during 7.69 and HSA Bitteswell 25.11.69 - 5.1.70 for mods, but remained at Kinloss until flown to St Athan 21.12.70. Transferred to No. 2 SoTT Cosford with maintenance serial 8119M. Offered for sale 1988 and purchased for display at Narborough (fuselage only). Currently at Fenlan & West Norfolk Aviation Museum, Wisbech, Cambs.

WR972 MR 3

First flown 6.11.56 and A/Cn 18.12.56, but retained for C(A) development trials on radio, radar, photographic and navigation equipment. Delivered to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 28.12.56, returning to Woodford 24.5.57 and prepared for flight trials of air conditioning, Autolycus, the nitrogen system and checks on noise levels against Contract 6/Acft/13766/ CB6(a). Reallocated to Avro Woodford 15.11.57 for Tl of mods to Contract 6/Acft/ 14824/CB6(a) and Stage I of Mod688 to Contract 6/Acft/15150/CB6(a). Allotted to the A&AEE 28.7.58 for official C(A) Release trials of Mods 688 and 595, the Zero Reader/ ILS installation and the AV 146 flamefloat launcher, arriving at Boscombe three days later. Reallocated to Avro 2.2.59 for TI of Phase II radio (Mod 772) against Contract KD/L/034/CB6(a) and delivered to Langar 11.2.59. WR972 was purchased by the MoA 13.3.59 for the RAE, but continued to be used for the performance testing of Mod 772, being delivered to the A&AEE 23.3.6() for sonobuoy and mixed bomb load clearances. To Avro Langar 15.12.60 for investigation into vibration problems with aerials fitted under Mod 772 (Phase II). WR972 returned to.Boscombe Down 31.1.61 for continuation of radar and radio, Orange Harvest ECM and sonobuoy Mk 1C equipment trials. Finally released to the RAE 10.4.61, the aircraft arrived at Farnborough three days later and was equipped for towing and dragtesting parachutes. Remained in use until fatigue life was expended. SoC Cat.5(Scrap) 31.1.73 and used for fire fighting and rescue training at Farnborough.

WR973 MR 3

First flown 18.1.57 and used by Avro for Mk 10 autopilot development against Contract 6/Acft/14554/ CB6(a). A/Cn 1.2.57 and handed over to the MoS Air Fleet at Woodford. After initial checks at the A&AEE 22-28.2.57 the aircraft was despatched to Boscombe Down for official clearance of the autopilot 10.7.57. To 49MU Colerne 2.10.57 for minor servicing by Avro CWP and then allotted to Avro Woodford 30.10.57 for performance measurements, vibration and ventilation trials. These were postponed and WR973 was reallotted to Armstrong Whitworth 24.12.57 for the installation and flight testing of a modified fuel system. WR973 arrived Baginton 3.2.58 and on completion of trials was transferred to Avro Woodford 3.3.59 for removal of performance test gear and the embodiment of C(A) Release mods against Contract 6/Acft/14156/CB24(c). Brought up to full Phase I standard and issued to 203 Sqn 25.2.60, receiving code E. To 49MU 7.60 for Phase 11 update, completed 9.60, when transferred to 23MU and prepared for reissue to 203 Sqn still as E. To 206 Sqn 29.1.62 and coded C. Allotted to Avro for Phase III modification 7.63 and was retained as the Tl aircraft for the Viper engine installation. Transferred to the MoA 29.1.65 for flight trials of the Viper against Contract KD/L/102/CB6(a), commencing at Woodford 29.2.65. To the A&AEE Boscombe Down 19.5.65 for preliminary performance tests, returning to Woodford 9.6.65. Back at Boscombe 28.7.65 for full trials, which included hot-weather checks in the USA 8.65. The aircraft returned to Woodford 30.9.65 and was transferred to Langar 31.12.65. With test equipment removed, WR973 was returned to MoD (Air) 28.1.66 and delivered to 206 Sqn at Kinloss 25.5.66 and coded U. Transferred to the Kinloss Wing 2.67 still as U. Remained at Kinloss apart from visits to Bitteswell 3.68 - 5.68, 12.69 - 2.70 and 10.70 - 11.70 for mods and overhaul. On 11.12.70 WR973 joined 42 Sqn at St Mawgan coded B. To Thorney Island for fire-fighting practice 14.6.71 when SoC Cat.5(Scrap).

WR974 MR 3

First flown 1.5.57 and A/Cn 24.5.57. Released for C(A) development work on 12 month free loan 31.5.57 and prepared by Avro Woodford/Langar for tropical and winter trials. Delivered to the A&AEE Boscombe Down from Langar 5.7.57 and flown out of Idris, Libya, for armament trials in tropical conditions 7.57 - 8.57. On return to Boscomhe transferred to 49MU 27.8.57 for additional 'winterization' by Avro CWP. Back to Boscombe Down 20.9.57 and despatched to CEPE Canada 8.10.57. Damaged 19.11.57 the aircraft was repaired in Canada and the trials completed. WR974 was delivered from Boscombe to 49MU Colerne 16.4.58 and modified to full Phase I standard by Avro CWP against Contract 6/Acft/15025/CB6(a). Allotted to 23MU 27.8.58 and ferried to Aldergrove 25.9.58. Issued to 203 Sqn 12.58 and coded F. Badly damaged landing at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, 18.8.59, WR974 was repaired on site by Fairey Aviation of Canada 11.69 - 6.60 and returned briefly to 203 Sqn before delivery to Avro Langar for Phase II update. Retained on completion and transferred to the MoA Air Fleet for use as a Phase III TI aircraft against Contract KD/L/081 and 082/CB6(a). Suffered damage in hangar accident 20.4.64. Allocated to the A&AEE for radio and navigation trials 16.7.64 and delivered to Boscombe Down 7.9.64. Carried out winterization tests on equipment after which returned to HSA Langar for pre-service preparation 3.3.65. Reallocated to the A&AEE 17.5.65 for further tropical trials of Phase III navigation equipment and flight tests of the Griffon 58 equipped with modified oil coolers. Arrived at Boscombe 21.6.65 and returned to Langar 10.9.65 for more Tl work, including stand-by bomb bay heating, photographic electronic flash unit and sonobuoy homer tests against Contract KD/L/125/ CB6(a). To Boscombe Down 23.3.66 for acceptance trials on the new equipment, on completion of which WR974 was despatched to ASWDU at Ballykelly 20 6.66. To HSA Bitteswell 7.66 for modification transferring to Langar until allotted on loan to MinTech 17.2.67 for further evaluation of sonobuoy homer equipment. To the RAE Farnborough 12.5.67 for tests by the Radio Department. Transferred to the A&AEE Boscombe Down for armament trials to ASR 816 12.7.67. WR974 returned to Ballykelly for more ASWDU trials 8.2.68, departing to HSA Bitteswell 5.4.68 for preparation to current service Phase 111 standard, completed 27.8.68. To 203 Sqn coded H. Loaned to 42 Sqn 9.68 - 1.69, returning to 203 Sqn until 1.70, when sent to Bitteswell for mods 1.70 - 3.70. Back with 203 Sqn 26.3.70, but transferred to the Kinloss Wing 6.4.70 and coded K. To Cosford 11.12.7() for No.2 SoTT as an instructional airframe with maintenance serial 8117M. Offered for sale 1988 and purchased by P. Vallance of Charlwood, West Sussex. Currently, Garwick Aviation Museum, Charlwood, Sussex.

WR975 MR 3

A/Cn 26.6.57 and issued to the RAF Handling Squadron 7.57. Suffered major fuel leak 29.7.57 and made emergency landing at Exeter. Returned to Avro 8.57 for sales tour of Portugal, but back with the Handling Sqn later in the month for production of 'Pilot's Notes'. From Boscombe to 23MU Aldergrove 14.10.57 and prepared for issue to 220 Sqn 11.57 as P. Repaired on site at St Mawgan by 49MU 5.58 - 2.59 following hydraulic failure 5.5.58, when aircraft landed on foam strip with nosewheel retracted. To 201 Sqn 3.59 recoded R until 8.59, when despatched to 49MU for Phase I mods by Avro CWP. Issued to 203 Sqn 11.59 and coded F. To 49MU for Phase II modernization by Avro CWP, completed 9.61, when returned to 203 Sqn still as F. To 201 Sqn 8.62 as O. Allocated to Avro Langar 3.63 for Phase III update, completed 1.65 when despatched to 206 Sqn and coded S. To 120 Sqn 3.66 and became A. To HSA for Viper fit 1.67, retaining code A with Kinloss Wing on return 7.67. To HSA Bitteswell 5.69 for mods, but hack at Kinloss 6.69 until ferried to St Athan 24.8.70 and declared Cat.5(Scrap) 1.10.71.

WR976 MR 3

A/Cn 19.7.57 and delivered to 23MU 9.8.57. Issued to 220 Sqn 30.8.57 (first RAF aircraft), becoming K. Nose undercarriage collapsed during landing on foam strip following hydraulic failure 2.5.58. Repaired by Avro CWP 5.58 - 12.58. 0n completion issued to 201 Sqn, still as K until allocated to 49MU 4.59 for Phase I modernization by Avro CWP, completed 9.59. To 206 Sqn 10.59 and coded F. Phase II mods completed 2.60 - 3.60 when aircraft returned to 206 Sqn still as F. To Avro 29.4.63 for strain-gauge tests on the propellers against Contract KD/L/100/CB6(a), arriving Langar 13.5.63 on MoA free loan until 30.8.63. Phase III modernization commenced at Langar 8.63 and was completed 4.65, when aircraft delivered to 201 Sqn and coded M. Returned to Langar for Viper fit 4.66 - 10.66, when WR976 rejoined 201 Sqn and was coded P. Transferred to Kinloss Wing 2.67 as P and crashed into the sea 180 nm off Land's End during low-level exercises 19.11.67. SoC Cat.5(Missing).

WR977 MR 3

A/Cn 31.8.57 and delivered to 23MU 14.9.57 for issue to 220 Sqn 10.57. Code L, which was retained when unit renumbered 201 Sqn 1.10.58. To Avro
Langar 5.59 - 11.59 for Phase I modernization. To 206 Sqn 11.59 and coded B. Despatched to Avro Langar for Phase II update and mods 1.62, completed 4.63. To 201 Sqn 4.63 and coded O. Again to Langar 7.65, for Phase III (Viper) modifications, which were completed 4.66. WR977 was delivered to 42 Sqn 5.66 as B, remaining until 5.68, when despatched to HSA Bitteswell for mods. To 203 Sqn 7.68 still as B, but loaned to 206 Sqn 7.69 and 42 Sqn 8.69. Returned to 203 Sqn 8.70 and remained until allocated to Thorney Island for practice fire fighting 11.71. Allotment cancelled and WR977 was ferried to Finningley 8.11.71 for the Museum with maintenance serial 8186M. Later disposed of to the Newark Air Museum, the aircraft being dismantled and moved to the site on Winthorpe airfield by road 1.5.77. Current.

WR978 MR 3

First flown 9.57 and A/Cn 31.10.57. delivered to 23MU 4.11.57 and issued to 220 Sqn later in the month. The code M was retained when the unit was renumbered 201 Sqn 1.10.58. To 49MU 5.59 for Cat.3 repair and Phase I modernization by Avro CWP. Transferred to 206 Sqn 10.59 as E until sent to Avro Langar 4.62 for Phase II update. Rejoined 206 Sqn 6.63 and recoded A. To HSA Langar for Phase 111 mods 31.12.64, completed 11.65. To 42 Sqn retaining code A. Despatched to HSA Woodford 7.66 for Viper fit and on completion 11.66 WR978 was returned to 42 Sqn. Loaned to the Kinloss Wing 7.69 - 9.69, retaining code A throughout. Flown to the RAF Fire Fighting and Safety School, Catterick, 29.11.70 and SoC Cat.5(Scrap).

WR979 MR 3

First flown 1.11.57 and A/Cn 14.11.57. To 23MU 15.11.57 and issued to 220 Sqn 12.57, subsequently coded N. Transferred to 201 Sqn on renumbering 1.10.58. To Avro Langar 4.59 for Phase I modification, completed 9.59, when returned to 201 Sqn and recoded M. To Avro Langar 10.61 for Cat.4 repair and Phase II update, completed 1.63. To 206 Sqn and coded B until 11.64, when allocated to HSA Langar for Phase III modernization, completed 9.65. Issued to 120 Sqn 10.65 and coded D, retained when transferred to the Kinloss Wing 2.67. To HSA for mods (probably Viper fit) 10.68 - 12.68, otherwise remaining on Kinloss charge until 30.7.70, when flown to St Athan for storage. Declared SoC Cat.5(Scrap) 1.10.71 and broken up.

WR980 MR 3

First flown 13.11.57 and A/Cn 25.11.57. Ferried to 23MU the following day and issued to 220 Sqn 1.58 as O, markings retained when the unit was renumbered 201 Sqn 1.10.58. Despatched to Avro Langar 3.59 for Phase I modernization, completed 12.59, when WR980 was delivered to 206 Sqn and became A. To Avro Langar 11.61 for Phase II update and repairs, completed 3.63, when the aircraft returned to 206 Sqn and was recoded D. Transferred to 201 Sqn as L 3.64 and 120 Sqn 5.65, but allotted to HSA Langar 6.65 for Phase III (Viper) modifications, completed 3.66. To 206 Sqn 3.66 as S, a code retained with the Kinloss Wing from 2.67. Modified at HSA Bitteswell 8.69 - 9.69, WR980 returned to Kinloss until put up for disposal and flown to 5MU Kemble 3.4.70. To the RAF Fire Fighting and Safety School, Catterick, 26.11.70 and SoC Cat.5(Scrap).

WR981 MR 3

A/Cn 12.57 and delivered to 23MU 24.12.57. Issued to 206 Sqn 1.58 and coded A. Cat.3 repair by Avro CWP 5.59, the aircraft going to 49MU Colerne 11.59 for Phase I mods by Avro CWP, completed 1.60. Issued to 120 Sqn still coded A. To 49MU 5.61 for Phase II update by Avro CWP, completed 9.61, when delivered to 203 Sqn and coded E. Cat.3 damage repaired by 23MU 10.61 - 11 61, returning to 203 Sqn until 1.62, when suffered another Cat.3 accident, which was repaired by Avro CWP. On completion 3.62 WR981 went back to 203 Sqn until transferred lo 201 Sqn 6.62 and coded P. Allocated to HSA Langar 1.64 for Phase III modernization, completed 7.65. Issued to 120 Sqn and coded B. Transferred to 201 Sqn 5.66 as N until returned to HSA for Viper installation 9.66. ToC by the Kinloss Wing 2.67 and recoded G. At HSA Bitteswell for mods 10.68 - 11.68, 6.69 - 8.69 and 6.7 - 8.70 and finally left Kinloss 27.11.70, when ferried to St Athan for storage. Reallocated and flown to Topcliffe 17.12.70, where declared Cat.5(GI) and allotted maintenance serial 8120M.

WR982 MR 3

A/Cn 26.2.58 and delivered to 23MU 4.3.58. Issued to 206 Sqn 3.58 and coded B. Despatched to Woodford 21.4.58 for investigation into engine fading incidents on MoA free loan to Avro against Contract KD/L/ 035/CB6(a). Returned to St Mawgan 13.6.59 and reissued to 206 Sqn. Allocated to 49MU 11.59 for Phase I modification by Avro CWP, completed 1.60, when issued to 203 Sqn and coded G. To Avro Langar 11.61 for Phase II update, and was retained for Phase 111 Tl work from 26.1.62, when WR982 was handed over to the MoA Air Fleet. Following conversion and contractor's trials, WR982 was delivered to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 14.4.64 for C(A) Release of Phase III armament, including bomb-bay heating, auxiliary fuel tank jettisoning, special stores drops and an investigation into vibration problems. On completion 20.5.65 the aircraft was allocated to HSA for refurbishing prior to RAF service. Arrived Langar 25.5.65 and on completion WR982 was ferried to Kinloss 12.11.65 and issued to 120 Sqn as A. Vipers installed by HSA 3.66 - 7.66, when transferred to 201 Sqn and coded 1. To Kinloss Wing charge 2.67, retaining J code. To 60MU 3.67 - 5.67 for fitment of STR 70 radar altimeter and allotted to MinTech 4.8.67 on loan for Viper (with water methanol) takeoff trials and clearance of the radar altimeter at the A&AEE. Ferried to Boscombe Down 7.8.67. WR982 remained until 28.11.67, when the aircraft returned to Kinloss still as J until withdrawn 9.70 and flown to Cosford 6.10.70 for use as an instructional airframe at No.2 SoTT. Received maintenance serial 8106M. Offered for sale by MoD 1988 in 'fair condition' purchased by P. Vallance of Charlwood, West Sussex. Currently, Garwick Aviation Museum, Charlwood, Sussex.

WR983 MR 3

A/Cn 14.3.58 and delivered to 23MU 17.3.58. Issued to 206 Sqn 4.58 and coded C. To 49MU 6.59 for Phase I mods by Avro CWP, completed 11.59, when returned to 206 Sqn and recoded D . To Avro 1.60 - 2.60 for Phase II update, the aircraft returning to 206 Sqn still coded C. Sustained Cat.3 damage, which was repaired by Avro CWP 2.63 - 5.63. Reissued to 206 Sqn 5.63, the aircraft was recoded F until 11.64, when allocated to Avro for Phase III modernization, completed 10.65. Issued to 120 Sqn 10.65 and coded E, retained on transfer to the Kinloss Wing 2.67. To HSA Woodford 4.67 - 6.67 for Viper fit and HSA Bitteswell for mods/overhaul 6.68 - 8.68, otherwise on Kinloss charge until 9.3.70, when despatched for storage at 5MU Kemble. Declared Cat.5(Scrap), WR983 was broken up during 1970, parts going to Colerne for instructional purposes.

WR984 MR 3

First flown 6.3.58 and A/Cn 31.3.58. Delivered to 23MU 4.4.58 and issued to 206 Sqn 4.58. Coded D. Sustained Cat.3 damage, which was repaired by Avro CWP during 6.59. Allocated to 49MU 11.59 for phase I mods by Avro CWP, completed 2.60. Delivered to 203 Sqn 16.2.60 and coded H. To 49MU 10.60 for Phase 2 update, completed 12.60, when returned to 203 Sqn still as H. Transferred to 201 Sqn 7.62 and coded L. Underwent Phase III modernization 3.64 - 8.65, when issued to 120 Sqn as C. Allotted to HSA 8.66 - 12.66 for Viper installation, returning to 120 Sqn, still as C, a code retained when WR984 was transferred to the Kinloss Wing 2.67. To 42 Sqn 11.67 still as C, and remained at St Mawgan apart from overhaul/mods at HSA Bitteswell 2.68 - 5.68 and 6.69 - 9.69 until flown to Topcliffe 9.11.70 and declared Cat.5(GI) with maintenance serial 8115M issued 7.71.

WR985 MR 3

A/Cn 17.4.58 and delivered to 23MU 23.4.58. Issued to 206 Sqn 6.58 and coded E. Despatched to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 3.4.59 for trials of the Maritime Tactical Position Indicator (OR/3042). The acceptance trial was completed 22.5.59 and the aircraft returned to St Mawgan 29.5.59. To 49MU 10.59 for Phase I modification by Avro CWP, completed 12.59, when issued to 203 Sqn and coded J. Cat.3 damage was repaired on site 8.61, when WR985 was sent to 49MU for Phase II update by Avro CWP. To 206 Sqn 2.62 and coded A until despatched to Avro Langar 6.63 for Phase III modernization. Completed 2.65, when WR985 returned to 206 Sqn and was coded T. Cat.3 damage sustained in flying accident 13.9.65 was repaired by 60MU 10.65 - 11.65, the aircraft returning to 206 Sqn until transferred to 120 Sqn 5.66 as H. To HSA Woodford 6.66 - 10.66 for Viper installation, when WR985 returned to Kinloss for 201 Sqn (still as H). Transferred to Kinloss Wing 2.67 as H, remaining until 9.70, except for a visit to HSA Bitteswell 10.68 - 12.68 for mods. Delivered to Cosford 25.9.70 for use as instructional airframe with No.2 SoTT. Allocated maintenance serial 8103M on arrival. Offered for sale in 'fair condition' by MoD 1988 and sold to a private purchaser. Currently: Long Marston AirfieldWarwickshire (Derelict)

WR986 MR 3

A/Cn 30.4.58 and delivered to 23MU Aldergrove 13.5.58. Issued to 206 Sqn 6.58 and coded F. Sent to Avro Langar 10.59 for Phase I modification, completed 12.59, when despatched to 203 Sqn and coded K. A visit to 49MU Colerne for mods 7.60 and a Cat.3 damage repair on site 5.61 interrupted service with 203 Sqn. In 10.61 WR986 was transferred to 201 Sqn and coded M. Allocated to Avro Langar 7.62 for Phase II update, completed 9.63. To 120 Sqn as E 9.63 until 10.65, when despatched to Avro Langar for Phase III modernization. Completed 9.66, when issued to 203 Sqn and coded G. Underwent mods at HSA Bitteswell 7.69 - 11.69, but otherwise remained with 203 Sqn until written off Cat.5(Scrap) 1.9.71 following the discovery of severe damage due to rat infestation. The aircraft was broken up at Safi, Malta.

WR987 MR 3

A/Cn 23.5.58 and delivered to 23MU 28.5.58. Issued to 220 Sqn 6.58 and coded R, retained when unit renumbered 201 Sqn 1.10.58. Transferred to 120 Sqn 121.58 and coded G. Despatched to 49MU Colerne 6.60 for Phase I modification and repair by Avro CWP, completed 7.61, when returned to 120 Sqn still as G. To Avro Langar 2.62 for update to Phase II standard, completed 4.62, when again back to 120 Sqn, but as C. To HSA Langar 9.65 for Phase III (Viper) conversion, completed 12.66. To 203 Sqn and coded D. To HSA Bitteswell for mods/overhaul 5.68 - 8.68 and 10.69 - 12.69, remaining with 203 Sqn until flown to 5MU Kemble 12.1.72 for open storage. Transferred to Honington 17.6.72 for fire practice. SoC Cat.5 (Scrap).

WR988 MR 3

A/Cn 28.5.58 and delivered to 23MU 9.6.58. Issued to 120 Sqn 7.58 and coded C. To Avro 10.59 for mods/repair, returning to 120 Sqn 6.60, but despatched to 49MU Colerne 8.60 for Phase I modification by Avro CWP. On completion 8.61 delivered to 203 Sqn and coded J. To Avro 10.61 for Phase II update, returning to 120 Sqn 7.62 still as A. Allocated to HSA Langar 8.63 for Phase Ill modernization, completed 3.65, when delivered to 206 Sqn and coded U. Transferred to 201 Sqn as M 5.66 and allotted to HSA Woodford for Viper installation 12.66. On completion 4.67 XF700 returned to the Kinloss Wing, retaining the M code and apart from mods at HSA Bitteswell 5.68 - 6.68, the aircraft remained on Kinloss charge until 1.69, when transferred to 203 Sqn and coded F. Despatched to Nicosia, Cyprus, 26.10.71 for fire-fighting training and SoC Cat.5(Scrap) on arrival. Scrapped 1.72 after spares recovery by 103MU.

XF701 MR 3

A/Cn 29.8.58 and delivered to 23MU 17.9.58. Issued to 120 Sqn 10.58 and coded F. To 49MU 5.60 for Phase I modifications, completed 6.61, when loaned to the MoA for C(A) trials. Flown from Colerne to Langar 12.7.61 and used for Tl of Mod 947 (tail cupola de-misting) against Contract KD/L/061/ CB6(a). Further TI work on Mods 986,989 (AD 712 radio compass), 1009 (cockpit cooling), 1011, 1013 and 1043 (ASV cooling) was then completed before XF701 was transferred to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 18.5.62 for acceptance tests. Returned to Langar 22.6.62 and brought up to full Phase II standard against Contract KD/L/054/CB6(a). Ferried to Boscombe Down 28.8.62 for retrial of Mod 1013 and three days later delivered direct to St Mawgan for 206 Sqn and coded E. Transferred to 201 Sqn 2.65 and coded A. Commenced Phase III (Viper) conversion 5.65 and on completion 4.66 delivered to 206 Sqn as T, a code retained when transferred to the Kinloss Wing 2.67. Apart from a short detachment to the A&AEE in 1968 and mods by HSA Bitteswell 1.69 - 4.69, XF701 remained on Kinloss charge until transferred to 42 Sqn 6.70 and coded B. At Bitteswell for mods 10.70 - 11.70 and recoded H on return to 42 Sqn. On disposal flown to the Central Training Establishment, Manston, 13.8.71 and SoC Cat.5(Scrap) on arrival.

XF702 MR 3

A/Cn 23.9.58 and delivered to 23MU 26.9.58. Issued to 203 Sqn 11.58 and subsequently coded H. To 49MU 1.60 for Phase I modification by Avro CWP, completed 3.60 when XF702 delivered to 120 Sqn as D. To 49MU 8.61 for Phase II update by Avro CWP, the aircraft being despatched to 206 Sqn on completion 11.61, and coded B. Allocated to Avro Langar 1.63 for Phase Ill modernization and on completion6.8.64 was loaned to the MoA for assessment by a Safety Study Group at the RAE Farnborough. Returned to Langar 27.8.64 and on completion of Contractor's tests XF702 was flown to the A&AEE 15.1.65 for flight trials of the GM7 compass system. Delivered direct to St Mawgan for 206 Sqn 1.2.65 and coded O until transfer to 120 Sqn 6.66, when coded B . To HSA Woodford for Viper fit 11.66, returning to Kinloss 3.67 on Wing charge, still as B. On 21.12.67 crashed into Creag Bhan, Lochailort, Inverness-shire, following severe icing in cloud. Total hours 3814.

A/Cn 3.10.58 and delivered to 23MU 8.10.58. Issued to Ballykelly 12.58 and transferred to 203 Sqn 1.59. To 49MU 1.60 for Phase I modification by Avro CWP, completed 4.60. Delivered to 120 Sqn 5.60 as F, but transferred to 203 Sqn 5.61 and coded L. Phase II update commenced 11.61 and completed 4.62 when XF703 was issued to 206 Sqn and coded D. Allotted to HSA 3.63 for Phase III modernization, completed 12.64, when reissued to 206 Sqn as R. Loaned to HSA 1.65 - 2.65 and transferred to 201 Sqn 3.66 coded O. To Kinloss Wing 2.67 until allocated to HSA Woodford 4.67 for Viper installation, completed 9.67. Returned to Kinloss and recoded P. To the A&AEE Boscombe Down 2.8.68 for installation and flight trials of radio altimeters ATN-71 and STR40A. The trials were quickly completed and XF703 returned to Kinloss 13.8.68. To HSA 8.69 - 10.69 and 12.69 - 4.70 for mods and in 6.70 transferred from Kinloss to St Mawgan and coded D with 42 Sqn. To HSA Bitteswell 2.70 - 8.70 for mods, the aircraft being recoded 1 on return to 42 Sqn. The last Mk 3 in No.18 Group service, XF703 was flown to Henlow 23.9.71 for preservation by the RAF Museum.

XF704 MR 3

A/Cn 30.10.58 and delivered direct to Ballykelly 11.58, nominally for issue to 240 Sqn. Actually delivered to 203 Sqn following renumbering of unit, and remained uncoded. To 49MU 2.60 for Phase I modification by Avro CWP, completed 4.60. Delivered to 120 Sqn and coded C;. Cat.3 damage repaired by Avro CWP 6.60 - 8.60 and, still with 120 Sqn, XF704 was recoded D 8.61. To Avro Langar 5.62 for Phase II update, completed 7.62 when the aircraft returned to 120 Sqn, still as D. Allocated to HSA Langar 10.63 for Phase III modernization, completed 5.65, when issued to 201 Sqn and coded L. Crashed into the Moray Firth eight miles north of Kinloss 8.12.65 while on local flying practice. SoC Cat.5(Missing).

Allocated to 49MU 8.61 for Phase II update by Avro CWP, completed 10.61. Issued to 203 Sqn and coded G. Mods by 23MU carried out 3.62, the aircraft remaining at Ballykelly until 8.62, when transferred to 201 Sqn and coded N. To HSA Woodford 11.64 for Phase III modernization. completed 12.65. when issued to 42 Sqn coded E. Fitted with Vipers at HSA Woodford 9.66 - 1.67 and modified at HSA Bitteswell 11.68 - 1.69, otherwise remaining with 42 Sqn until 7.69, when loaned to Kinloss. Allocated to Avro Langar 2.65 for Phase III modernization, completed 12.65. To 42 Sqn 1.66 and coded D. XF707 was the last aircraft to be fitted with Vipers 5.67 - 1.68, making its first flight with the auxiliary engines installed on 19.12.67 from Woodford. Returned to 42 Sqn 1.68 and remained with the unit until withdrawn from use and flown to Benson 28.4.71 for fire-fighting practice. SoC Cat.5(Scrap) on arrival.

XF708 MR 3

Delivered direct to 201 Sqn 1.3.59 already Phase I modified. Coded O on arrival. Allocated to Avro Langar 5.62 for Phase II update, completed 8.63, when issued to 120 Sqn as A. To HSA Langar 11.65 for Phase III modernization and used for Tl of static vent cross-connector (to eliminate effects of yaw on pressure instruments) and Mods 1349, 1368 and 1403 from 19.10.66 to 6.2.67, when despatched to 203 Sqn and coded C. Apart from mods by HSA the aircraft remained with 203 Sqn. transferring from Ballykelly to Luqa with the unit 29.1.69, until 1.72 when flown to 5MU Kemble for storage. To Duxford 23.8.72 as a 'flying exhibit' for the Imperial War Museum. In practice XF708 was grounded on arrival. Currently in line for restoration and indoor exhibition..

XF709 MR 3

A/Cn 20.3.59 and issued direct to 201 Sqn as a Phase l modified aircraft 4.59. Coded N. To Avro Langar 7.62 for Phase II update and mods, completed 10.63, when delivered to 120 Sqn as D. Allocated to HSA Langar 10.65 for Phase III (Viper) modernization. completed 7.66. To 203 Sqn 8.66 and coded F. Remained with unit until 5.3.69, when allotted to HSA for flight trials of new tailplane de-icing panels to establish optimum flow rate (Mod 1470). On completion despatched to the Kinloss Wing 6.5.69 and coded M. Mods by HSA Bitteswell 10.69 - 11.69. Left Kinloss for St Athan 30.7.70 and on arrival declared NEA. SoC Cat.5(Scrap) 1.10.71.

Flown from Langar to Woodford 11.1.62 and stripped for rebuild. Allocated to the A&AEE for tropical trials, arriving Boscombe Down 17.7.64 and Idris 30.7.64. Returned to Woodford 5.9.64 for further handling trials against Contract KD/L/081/CB6(a). Flown to St Mawgan 2.65 for Contractor's take-off performance trials and on 28.4.65 despatched to the A&AEE for 'spot' checks on handling techniques. To HSA Woodford 9.6.65 and brought up to full Phase III standard. Returned to MoD charge 6.12.65 and prepared for issue to St Mawgan, arriving 22.3.66 for 42 Sqn. Coded C. Allocated to Avro Langar 9.62 for Phase II update and repair, completed 12.63, when the aircraft joined 120 Sqn and was coded B. Commenced Phase III modernization 6.65 at HSA Langar and after trials of the Viper installation at the A&AEE Boscombe Down 3.66 - 6.66 the aircraft was delivered to 42 Sqn and coded F. To HSA Bitteswell for mods 8.68 - 9.68, 5.69 - 7.69 and 9.70 - 10.70, but otherwise with 42 Sqn until withdrawn from service and despatched to Kinloss 24.6.71 for fire-fighting practice. Took part in retirement ceremony flypast at DF Malan airport 23.11.84. Flown to Swartkop 4.12.84 for SAAF Museum. Restored for flight to UK in August 1994. Crashed in transit in position 22o37”59’8N 01o 30”58’W in the Western Sahara with no loss of life. Photos in September 2000 shows her stripped inside from the cockpit back to the galley.

First flown 6.5.57 and officially accepted 16.5.57 in 35 Sqn SAAF markings, coded O. Ferried to RAF St Mawgan 21.5.57 for work-up exercises. Departed for South Africa 13.8.57 with 1716, arriving Cape Town 18.8.57. Carried out first long range flight to Marion Island 22.3.58. Progressively modified up to Phase III (nonViper) standard. Underwent wing re-sparring 9.75 - 10.77. When withdrawn from use stored in open at Ysterplaat AB until dismantled and despatched by sea to Durban and then road to Midmar Dam 10.87 for display in the Natal Parks Board Museum. When the Midlands Historic Village closed, bought at auction by a businessman from Stanger in the Kwazulu-Natal Province. Last photographed in July 2001 - open to the elements and minus wings.

1718 c/n 1528

Accepted in 35 Sqn SAAF markings, coded K. Ferried to St Mawgan and used for work-up exercises before departing for South Africa with 1716 and 1717 on 13.8.57. Arrived Cape Town 18.8.57. Suffered wheels-up landing at DF Malan 9.11.59, but soon repaired. Crashed in Wemmershook Mountains near Cape Town 8.8.63 after striking a hill during bad weather. Total flying hours 777.

1719 c/n 1529

First flown 6.9.57 and accepted in 35 Sqn SAAF markings, coded L. Delivered to South Africa 13.2.58. To UK 25.2.63 and carried out training exercises with Coastal Command, returning to South Africa 1.4.63. Progressively modified to Phase III (nonViper) standard by 3.73. Withdrawn from use 24.4.78 and stored in open at Ysterplaat AB until moved to Stellenbosch airfield for display outside clubhouse. Scrapped.

1720 c/n 1530

First flown 26.9.57 and accepted in 35 Sqn markings, coded M. Delivered to South Africa 13.2.58 with 1719. During asymmetric practice 18.9.61 landed in undershoot at DF Malan and badly damaged. Repaired on site, a hangar being constructed around it while work proceeded. Progressively modified to Phase III (nonViper) standard by 3.73. Grounded 10.3.83 on reaching end of fatigue life. Allocated as gate guardian at AFB Ysterplaat, but actually placed outside Warrant Officers' Club on the base painted as 1717 and coded L. Needs serious attention. The closure of AFB Ysterplaat is pending in 2002 and the current site will be within the AFB area once it is developed.

1721 c/n 1531

First flown 12.12.57 and painted in 35 Sqn markings, coded N. Accepted from Avro 30.1.58 and ferried to South Africa 13.2.58 via St Eval, arriving 26.2.58. Landed wheels-up at AFB Ysterplaat 10.9.62 and 'slightly' damaged. Repaired and progressively brought up to Phase III (non-Viper) by HSA CWP. Took part in final retirement ceremony at DF Malan 23.11.84 and flown to Swartkop 12.84 for the SAAF Museum. (In storage.) As of March 2002, has received a fair amount of tender loving care from the young members of the Friends of the SAAF Museum (Pretoria Branch)

1722 c/n 1532

First flown 7.2.58 and painted in 35 Sqn SAAF markings, coded P. Departed for South Africa 14.2.58, arriving Cape Town 26.2 58. On 7 6.60 the nosewheel assembly refused to lock down and the aircraft was landed on foam trip at Langebaanweg. Nose undercarriage collapsed on touchdown and aircraft slightly damaged. Repaired and progressively brought up to Phase III (non-Viper) standard by HSA CWP. To UK 28.6.64 for JASS course, flying from Ballykelly. Returned to Cape Town 30.7.64. Took part in final retirement ceremony, overflying DF Malan in formation with 1716 and 1721 on 23.11.84. Retained by 35 Sqn at DF Malan in ground running condition for SAAF Museum. Still flying in 2002 with 90 hours of main spar life left. Airworthy.

1723 c/n 1533

First flown 10.2.58 and painted in 35 Sqn markings, coded Q. Ferried to South Africa 14.2.58 and on arrival at AFB Ysterplaat 26.2.58 suffered a hydraulic failure. Undercarriage and flaps lowered using emergency air, but brakes inoperative and aircraft ran off runway and collided with a brick building. Damage to No. I engine repaired. Progressively modified by Avro/HSA CWP to Phase III (nonViper) standard. Grounded 22.11.77 having expended fatigue life. Stored in open at AFB Ysterplaat until sold for display on top of 'Vic's Viking' garage. Johannesburg. Currently repainted canary yellow.
