This details the contracts placed for Shackletons with A.V. Roe & Co Ltd, the serials allocated, contract changes and individual histories of the aircraft built, with particular reference to trials usage, operational service, unit codes and major modifications.

Contract 6/Acft/1077/CB6(a) dated 28 May, 1947, for three prototypes designed to Specification R.5/46 and serialled VW126,VW131 and VW135 (allotted 17 July, 1947)

VW126

First flown 9.3.49. Retained at Woodford for manufacturer's trials 4.49-6.49, during which aircraft made several visits to A&AEE Boscombe Down for short periods. To Hatfield 6.49 on allotment to de Havilland Propellers Co for straingauge tests on contra-rotating propeller assembly under Contract 6/ Props/712/CB25(b). Not accepted for tests and returned to Woodford 8.7.49 for continuation of manufacturer's trials. Again despatched to Hatfield 30.12.49 under amended contract. Returned to Woodford and sent to Boscombe Down 26.3.50 for full load trials (86.000 Ib) until 31.3.50. To Hatfield during 4.50 for trials on cropped propellers, the aircraft being damaged by a tow bar while being prepared for flight 3.5.50. More AuW tests at Boscombe Down 19-23.6.50 and 4-6.7.50 followed by high-speed handling trials 10.7.50. To Rolls Royce, Hucknall, 13.7.50 for fitment of long tail pipes to engine exhaust manifolds. Returned to Woodford but transferred to Boscombe Down 8.29.8.50 for performance tests. New rudder spring tabs were tested at Boscombe 5.-6.10.50 and 18-19.10.50, when noise and CO contamination assessments were also made. Acceptance tests of cabin heating and noise suppression by Avro at Woodford 1.1.50 were followed by an assessment of noise level and flame damping by a Coastal Command crew 1.2.50. During 1951 VW126 was fitted with dummy nose and tail fairings and a retractable ASV radar scanner installation for use as an aerodynamic test vehicle for the Mk 2 variant of the aircraft. Revised braking system and internal control locks also installed, the aircraft flying in this configuration 19.7.51. To Boscombe Down 25.7.51 for assessment of toe brakes and lockable rudders, returning to Woodford 1.8.51 for further Mk 2 development work. Delivered to the A&AEE 14.5.52 for handling and performance trials in Mk 2 configuration. Completed by 3.10.52, when aircraft despatched to Woodford and from 26.1.53 VW126 was officially on loan to Avro for more noise-reduction experiments against Contract 6/Acft/8862/CB9(a). During 2.55 tests made on sequence of anticipated bomb door collapse during ditching, the aircraft returning to C(A) charge 30.5.55. On 9.12.55 VW126 was allotted to the RRE for two years as a flying test bed for guided weapons development, the aircraft arriving at Defford from Woodford 12.1.56. Moved over to RRE Pershore 18.9.57. Despatched to 23MU Aldergrove 29.5.58 for temporary storage, and transferred to Air Ministry charge 25.11.59 for instructional purposes. To No. 2 Radio School, Yatesbury, 2.60 with maintenance serial 7626M. Broken up on site and sections transferred to 71 MU Bicester 10.65.

VW131

First flown 2.9.49. Retained at Woodford for manufacturer's tests, during which it was flown at the SBAC show at Farnborough 6.11.9.49, under loan agreement 6/Acft/4284/CB9(a). To A&AEE Boscombe Down 13.2.50 for an appreciation of longitudinal stability at low speed. Returned to Woodford 3.3.50 and prepared for full handling and performance trials. To Hucknall 31.5.50 for engine adjustments, and despatched from Woodford to Boscombe 9.6.50 for official trials. To Khartoum 6.10.50 for tropical performance trials, but received Cat.2 damage in bird strike. which delayed the aircraft's return to Woodford until 18.11.50. After fitment of spring tabs to controls VW131 was redelivered to Boscombe Down for continuation of handling and range performance trials. Suffered Cat.3 damage 12.2.51, when a pylon at the entrance to the wind tunnel fell on the starboard wing and tail plane. Repaired on site by CWP and returned to Woodford 6.2.52 for general check and preparation for propeller de-icing and strain-gauge tests. Delivered to Hatfield for de Havilland Propellers Co 5.8.52, returning to Woodford ten days later. Back to Hatfield later in month and statically displayed at West Malling 20.9.52. From Hatfield to Woodford 18.10.52 for inspection prior to transfer to Napier Ltd for conversion as flying testbed for the Nomad E145 engine. To Luton for Napier 16.1.53, the initial loan being extended to 31.7.54. When the Nomad programme was cancelled VW 131 was stored at Luton, partially converted, until dismantled 1.56. The fuselage was sent to the Avro facility at Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, for research into the ditching qualities of the aircraft under Contract 6/Acft/11603/ CB6(a) dated 7.2.56. VW131 was tested to destruction and finally SoC 10.5.62.

VW135

First flown 29.3.50. Retained at Woodford for manufacturer's trials until despatched to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 4.7.50 for radio tests. Transferred to the RAE Farnborough 14.7.50. Returned to Boscombe Down 6.9.50 and underwent further radio, armament and navigation trials 11.50 - 3.52, during which the sonics system was tested. To Woodford 14.3.52, but returned to the A&AEE 19.3.53 for extension of armament clearances, including the automatic flame-float chute, sonobuoy launchers and camera installation. To 49 MU Colerne 8.4.54 for breakdown and spares recovery. SoC 1 3.4.54.

Contract 6/Acft/6062/CB6(a) dated 21 March,1946. for 30 Shackleton GR Is to Specification R.5/46 serialled VP253 - VP268, VP281 - VP294 (allotted 9.3.46). Twentynine were built (VP253 cancelled when prototypes ordered)

VP254 MR 1

First flown 28.3.50. Retained by Manufacturers for trial installation (TI) of modifications. Handed over to CS(A) 31.7.50, but remained at Woodford. Transferred to Avro, Langar, 15 .12.54 still under extended free loan to CS(A). Allotted for guided weapons research at the RRE Defford 30.9.55, but this was cancelled 5.12.55 and the aircraft prepared for flight trials of IFF Mk 10 and SARAH at Langar. To A&AEE Boscombe Down 6.2.56 for official trials of the equipment, returning to Langar 4.4.56 for incorporation of modifications under Contract 6/Acft/ 12220/CB6(a). Further loan extensions to 5.9.57, but on 27.1.58 the aircraft was returned to Air Ministry charge in exchange for VP258. To Waddington for CWP mods by Bracebridge Heath before despatch to 23MU Aldergrove for storage (total hours 1124). Allotted to FEAF 9.5.58 and flown out to Changi. ToC by 205 Sqn 25.5.58 and coded B. Crashed in South China Sea 280 miles north of Labuan 9.12.58.

VP255 MR 1

First flown 30.6.50. Retained on manufacturer's trials, during which it attended the RAF Display, Farnborough, 412.7.50 and was demonstrated to RAF personnel at St Eval, Kinloss, Leuchars and Ballykelly during 8.50. Retumed to Woodford 18.8.50 and was officially delivered 29.9.50, when it was transferred to CS(A) charge. To TFU Defford 3.10.50 for radio trials, transferring to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 31.10.50 for radioclearance checks before returning to Woodford 20.11.50 for flight trials by Avro on the Bristol B.17 turret 1 1.504.51 and the engine mountings 1.5112.51 (as part of efforts to reduce vibration). Delivered to 38MU Llandow 28.8.52 for storage and CWP mods. Prepared for service and delivered to 240 Sqn 31.12.53, receiving code LP. Tranferred to 269 Sqn 5.7.54 and recoded BD, but underwent mods at Langar 9.549.55, returning to 269 Sqn uncoded. To ASWDU 7.56 until 28.1.58, when despatched to 23MU, transferring to 5MU 11.4.60. To 23MU 16.5.60 and allocated to FEAF 1.6.60. With 205 Sqn for four months before returning to 23MU 3.10.60 for LTS until allotted to the A&AEE 27.4.61. Despatched to Boscombe Down 5.5.61 for the carriage and release of stores from the automa tic launching chute Mk 11 (Mod 180). To Langar 11.8.61 for storage prior to a retrial of Mod 1013 (launching chute). To Boscombe Down 14.9.61, returning to 23MU 2.10.61 on completion of trial. Sold as scrap 22.8.63.

VP256 MR 1

First flown 18.9.50. Despatched lo the RAF Handling Squadron, Manhy, 28.9.50. Returned to Wooclford 20.11.50 for mods before redelivery to Manby 20.12.50, remaining until 5.2.51, while the 'Pilot's Notes' were produced. To 38MU Llandow 19.7.51 and prepared for issue, being delivered to 224 Sqn 30.8.51 and becoming BA. Transferred to 269 Sqn 11.2.52 still coded BA, moving to Ballykelly with the unit 14.3.52. Suffered Cat.4 damage 26.10.54 when pilot attempted to take off with the elevator locks engaged. Aircraft failed to get airborne and was reassessed Cat.5 (Components) 14.4.55 and SoC. Dumped at 23MU Aldergrove and scrapped 2.63

VP257 MR 1

First flown 28.8.50. Attended SBAC show, Farnborough, 9.50. To CSDE Wittering 29.1 1.50, remaining until 13.4.51. To 38MU 17.8.51 and prepared for issue. Delivered to 220 Sqn 1.11.51 and coded TP. Cat.3 ground accident 12.11.52 when undercarriage collapsed as engines were started. Repair on site by de Havilland CWP was completed 15.9.53, when aircraft returned to 220 Sqn and was subsequently recoded TK. to CCMC 20.9.54 17.11.54.To 49MU for special fitment 23.9.55, returning to 220 Sqn 18.10.55, still as K. To 23MU 21.1.58 and declared NEA. Sold as scrap 28.2.63.

VP258 MR 1/T.4

First flown 13.10.50 and A/Cn 28.2.51. Delivered to 38MU Llandow 7.3.51 and prepared for issue. To 120 Sqn 3.4.51 and coded AC. Cat.3 towing accident 12.4.51 when rudder damaged by strong wind. Repair on site by Avro CWP was completed 10.5.51 when returned to 120 Sqn. Transferred with unit to Aldergrove 1.4.51 still as AC. On site repair by 278MU commenced 21.12.54 VP258 remaining on 120 Sqn charge until 5.55, when stored until flown to Woodford for conversion as the T.4 prototype. On completion despatched to the A&AEE Boscombe Down for official trials of T.4 radio/radar installation. To Langar 3.5.57 for Tl of ASV Mk 21 Blue Silk mods, which brought the aircraft up to full T.4 standard under Contract 6/Acft/12278/CB6(a). Transferred to the MoS Air Fleet in exchange for VP254 on 27.1.58 and fitted with Phase II radio (Mod 772) before despatch to Boscombe Down 12.9.58 for clearance. Returned to Air Ministry charge 30.12.58 on completion and delivered to Kinloss 12.1.59, joining MOTU as D. To AWA Bitteswell for complete Phase II mods 19.8.59, returning to MOTU via 49MU 4.60 still as D. Further mods by Avro Langar 4.6.62 until 5.63, when despatched to 23MU and prepared for service. Returned to MOTU and recoded N. Sold to the Board of Trade and delivered to Fire School at Stansted 17.7.68.

VP259 MR 1/T.4

First flown 24.10.50 and A/Cn 27.2.51. To 38MU 3.51 via A&AEE (for production aircraft weight and balance check). Delivered to 120 Sqn 3.4.51 and coded AB. Transferred with unit to Aldergrove 1.4.52.Mods at CCMC 6.12.5417.1.55 completed Autolycus installation. Remained with 120 Sqn until 28.4.55, when sent to Avro Woodford. C(A) free loan for three months 3.6.55, but retained at Woodford until T.4 conversion started 28.4.56. To Wadding ton for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP. To 23MU 20.6.57 and prepared for issue. Delivered to Kinloss
10.7.57 and ToC by MOTU 22.7.57 coded Q. Crashed into Haldon Hill near Elgin, Morayshire, 10.1.58 and SoC Cat.5(Scrap) 31.5.58.

VP260 MR 1

First flown 22.1.51 and A/Cn 28.2.51. Delivered to 38MU 7.3.51 and prepared for issue. To 120 Sqn 30.3.51 and coded AA. Transferred with unit from Kinloss to Aldergrove 1.4.52. While on an exercise from Malta suffered hydraulic failure and crash landed at Takali on port mainwheel 24.10.55. Cat.3 damage repaired on site by Safi MU. To 23MU 23.4.57 for storage. Declared NEA and broken up 1962. Sold as scrap 29.9.63.

VP261 MR 1

First flown 13.2.51 fitted with modified elevators and underwent trials at Woodford and the A&AEE Boscombe Down 2.513.51. A/Cn 30.3.51 and delivered to 38MU 10.4.51. Issued to ASWDU 27.4.51, but transferred to 120 Sqn 18.5.51 and coded AJ. To Aldergrove with unit 1.4.52. While carrying out dummy attacks on a British submarine 12 nm off Berwick upon Tweed 25.6.52 VP261 lost height in a turn and crashed into the sea, killing 11 of the crew. Declared Cat.5 (Missing) and SoC 11.8.52.

VP262 MR 1

First flown 20.2.51 and A/Cn 27.3.51. To 38MU 27.3.51 and prepared for issue. Delivered to 120 Sqn 13.4.51 and coded AD. Suffered Cat.3 damage, which was repaired on site by Avro CWP starting 9.6.51. Returned to 120 Sqn and transferred to Aldergrove 1.4.52. 'Special fitment' by 49MU 24.1.53, the aircraft remaining with 120 Sqn until sent to MOTU 29.10.56 and coded P. To 23MU 22.9.58 for storage. Declared NEA and broken up 1962. Sold as scrap 22.8.63.

VP263 MR 1

First flown 17.3.51 and A/Cn 30.3.51. Delivered to the RAE 18.4.51 on three-month free loan for handling and Mk 9 autopilot trials. Transferred to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 20.7.51 for noise/vibration tests and Bristol B .17 turret trials. Suffered Cat.2 accident at Tangmere 7.11.51, but remained with A&AEE for investigation of directional wander until despatched to 38MU 4.2.52 for mods and preparation for service issue. Allotted to 42 Sqn 8.10.52, but delivered instead to 206 Sqn, St Eval, 9.10.52 and was subsequently coded B-U. Left unit 5.54 and probably on St Eval station charge until transferred to 220 Sqn 8.7.54 and recoded T-O. To CCMC 7.8.54 - 22.9.54 and 'special fitments' made 10.54 and 8,55, To CCMC again 1.55-2.55 for mods. Suffered wheels-up landing due to complete hydraulic failure 10.12.55. Cat.3 repair on site and returned to 220 Sqn as O. Transferred to 206 Sqn 14.1.58 and recoded G. Special mods for meteorological reconnaissance duties 3.58 and ToC by 269 Sqn 29.5.58. Transferred to 204 Sqn the next day and flown out to Christmas Island for Grapple Y uncoded. To MOTU 10.6.59 and coded W. A Cat.3 flying accident 2.2.60 was repaired on site at Kinloss, the aircraft remaining with MOTU until 11.9.61, when delivered to 23MU and stored until declared NEA. Sold as scrap 22.8.63.

VP264 MR 1

First flown 8.3.51 and A/Cn 30.3.51. Transferred to CS(A) on 15 day free loan 5.4.51 for flight trials of Daniel cabin heater (Mod55). To 38MU 17.5.51 and prepared for issue. Delivered to 236 OCU 31.5.51 and coded C-Z. Struck by a taxying Lancaster GR 3, RE 186,24.8.51 and assessed Cat.3. Repaired on site and remained with 236 OCU until 26.3.53, when transferred to Rolls-Royce Hucknall on four month CS(A) free loan for strain-gauge tests on reduction gear housing. To 38MU 3.11.53 for storage until reallocated to 236 OCU and delivered 8.2.55, being recoded T. Underwent mods 9.1.56 to 4.2.56, when returned to 236 OCU, remaining when unit name changed to MOTU 10.56, still as T. To 23MU 15.3.60 for storage. Sold as scrap 22.11.62.

VP265 MR 1

First flown 29.3.51 and A/Cn 20.4.51. To 38MU 23.4.51 and prepared for issue. Delivered to 120 Sqn 17.5.51 and coded A-F. Moved with unit to Alder grove 1.4.52, remaining until sent across the airfield to 23MU 28.9.53 for storage, during which it underwent mods by 49MU 1.11.55 - 8.12.55. From 23MU to 12MU Kirkbridge 8.4.57, returning to 23MU 17.5.57 in preparation for issue to 220 Sqn three days later. Coded L, the aircraft remained with the unit until 14.1.58, when transferred to 206 Sqn. A 'special fitment' commenced 2.2.58 and on completion the aircraft was transferred to 269 Sqn 30.4.58. To MOTU 2.11.58 and coded F. To 23MU 5.10.59 for storage, but back with MOTU 5.5.60 still coded F. To 23MU for LTS 2.10.61. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 23.10.63.

VP266 MR 1

First flown 4.4.51 and A/Cn 27.4.51. Delivered to 38MU 3.5.51 and prepared for issue to 120 Sqn 18.5.51. Coded A-G the aircraft moved with the unit from Kin loss to Aldergrove 1.4.52. To 23MU 28.9.53 for LTS. Issued to 269 Sqn 2.12.54 and coded B-A (later removed). A 'special fitment' completed during 11.55, the aircraft remaining with 269 Sqn until transfer to 204 Sqn 5.5.58 (remaining uncoded). To MOTU 14.10.58 and coded P. Received Cat.3 damage 23.21.58, which was repaired on site, the aircraft staying with MOTU until 17.5.60, when despatched to 23MU. Stored until declared NEA. Sold as scrap 28.2.63.

VP267 MR 1

First flown 13.4.51 and A/Cn 30.4.51. To 38MU 10.5.51 and issued to 120Sqn 29.5.51, becoming AH. To Aldergrove 1.4.52 with unit and remained until towed across the airfield to 23MU for long- storage 6.10.53. Modified whilst in storage by 49MU 8.55. Transferred back to 23MU 14.6.57 and remained until allotted to FEAF and delivered to 205 Sqn, Changi 18.6.60. Coded L, VP267 remained with 205 Sqn until withdrawn from service following arrival of replacement Mk 2. SoC Cat.5 (Components) 1.12.62 in Singapore.

VP268 MR 1

First flown 20.4.51 and A/Cn 30.4.51. Ferried t 38MU Llandow 25.5.51 and prepared for issue to 236 OCU. Arrived at Kinloss 15.6.51 and coded C Y. A Cat.3 flying accident on 22.3.52 was repaired on site and the aircraft underwent modification commencing 30.11.55. Remained with 236 OCU, transferring to MOTU 10.56, still as Y. To 23MU 9.6.5 for storage. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 23.10.63

VP281 MR 1

First flown 24.4.51 and A/Cn 30.4.51. To 38MU with VP268 25.5.51 and prepared for issue to ASWDU. Arrived at St Mawgan 19.6.51 and subsequently coded F-B. Mods at CCMC 4-27.10.54 and underwent considerable further modification during trials work, which continued until VP281 transferred to 236 OCU 12.4.56 and recoded C-Z To MOTU 10.56 on change of unit name, retaining code Z. To 23MU 4.5.60 for storage. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 28.2.63.

VP282 MR 1

First flown 1.5.51 and A/Cn 29.5.51. To 38MU 31.5.51 and delivered to ASWDU 14.6.51, receiving code F-K. At A&AEE Boscombe Down for Lindholme tests 6.56 and underwent mods by 49MU starting 20.11.56. Returned to ASWDU and moved with unit to Ballykelly 30.8.58. 'Special fitment' installed by 49MU commencing 9.10.58, after which VP282 used for Orange Harvest ECM trials until 19.8.60, when despatched to 23MU for storage. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 31.5.62.

VP283 MR 1

First flown 11.5.51 and A/Cn 31.5.51. Ferried to 38MU 19.6.51 by No. 2 Ferry Pool, Aston Down. The aircraft struck a post on the approach to Llandow, resulting in Cat.3 damage to the port inner rear propeller. Delivered to 224 Sqn, North Front, Gibraltar, 25.7.51. On 12.8.51 the aircraft crashed on the approach to Gibraltar during conversion training. Assessed Cat.5 (Scrap) and SoC the same day (still uncoded).

VP284 MR 1

First flown 23.5.51 and A/Cn 31.5.51. To 38MU 20.6.51 and prepared for issue. To 236 OCU 29.6.51 and coded C-X. To 23MU 30.1.53 for storage. Delivered to 204 Sqn 26.2.54, remaining uncoded until transferred to 269 Sqn 9.8.54, when code became B-E. Mods at CCMC 1.55 - 2.55. More mods 5.5 - 77.57 and codes removed soon after return to unit. To 23MU 22.8.58 for storage until declared NEA and sold as scrap 28.2.63.

VP285 MR 1

First flown 26.5.51 and A/Cn 31.5.51. Ferried to 38MU 28.6.51 and issued to 236 OCU 11.7.51. Code C-W. On 30.12.51 received Cat.3 damage to the rudders from buffeting whilst taxying in a gale. The damage was repaired on site at Waddington, the aircraft returning to 236 OCU on 1.2.52. To 38MU 1.8.53 for storage, during which Cat.3 repairs were made by CWP. Issued to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 9.9.54 on C(A) free loan for Blue Silk trials. The original sixmonth loan was extended until 22.10.55 for desert and additional sea Blue Silk (doppler) runs. To 49MU 27.1.56 for mods, the aircraft being allocated to Avro at Colerne for a TI of ASV Mk 21 on 13.3.56 against Contract 6/Acft/ 13083/CB6(a). The loan was further extended to 30.6.57 and the aircraft visited TRE Defford 14.5.5611.7.56 and ASWDU 7.5 - 12.6.57 while still on C(A) charge at Boscombe Down. To ASWDU 16.7.57 for further operational trials of the ASV Mk 21/Blue Silk equipment. On completion of trials the equipment was apparently removed at St Mawgan before despatch to 23MU 7.1.58 for STS. Issued to MOTU 20.4.58 and the ASV Mk 21/Blue Silk reinstalled 7.588.58 for training purposes. To 23MU 22.3.60 for further storage, but declared NEA and broken up in 1962. Sold as scrap 28.2.63.

VP286 MR 1

First flown 31.5.51 and A/Cn 31.6.51. Ferried to 38MU Llandow 2.7.51 and prepared for issue. To 236 OCU 17.7.51 and coded CV. Flew into sea off Tarbat Ness, Cromarty, 8.10.52 during a gunnery exercise (14 killed). Declared Cat.5 (Missing) the same day. SoC 27.10.52.

VP287 MR 1

First flown 7.6.51. To 38MU Llandow 12.7.57 and issued to 224 Sqn, Gibraltar, 25.7.51. Coded B-B VP287 received Cat.3 damage when it landed wheelsup at North Front 21.9.51. Repaired on site and transferred to 269 Sqn 11.2.52 still as B-B. Moved to Ballykelly 14.3.52 with the unit, remaining until going to 240 Sqn 5.6.58 as B. To 23MU Aldergrove 30.10.58 for storage until declared NEA and sold as scrap 23.10.63.

VP288 MR 1

First flown 15.6.51 and A/Cn 29.6.51, but retained at Woodford on CS(A) free loan for three months of sonobuoy trials, which commenced 12.7.51. To the RAE 10.10.51 for official tests by the Radio Flight before delivery to 38MU 3.1.52 and preparation for issue to ASWDU. Delivered to St Mawgan on 25.1.52 and coded F-C. To CAPMF, St Mawgan, 27.5.54 and fitted with Autolycus before transfer to 220 Sqn 19.9.54 to become T-R. Underwent modification from 18.10.55, but returned to 220 Sqn on completion, still as R, until sent to Avro Langar 8.57 for more mods. After visiting Waddington for CWP by Avro Bracebridge Heath the aircraft was flown to 23MU 21.11.58 for storage. Allotted to FEAF, VP288 arrived at Changi and was issued to 205 Sqn 12.9.59, receiving code K. Ferried back to the UK during 8.60, VP288 arrived at de Havilland Hawarden 26.8.60 for further mods, returning to Singapore 6.3.61 for 205 Sqn. Remained with the unit until replaced by a Mk 2, when declared NEA and sold as scrap 5.8.64.

VP289 MR 1

First flown 25.6.51 and A/Cn 29.6.51. To 38MU 19.7.51 and issued to 224Sqn 31.8.51, becoming B-J. Avro Shackleton Mk1 VP291

First flown 29.6.51 and delivered to 38MU 2(1.7.51. Issued to 224 Sqn 7.9.51 and coded B-C. Suffered Cat.3 flying accident 15.10.51, which was repaired on site. VP291 was transferred to 269 Sqn 11.2.52, retaining its B-C coding, and moved with unit from Gibraltar to Ballykelly 14.3.52. Remained on Squadron strength, latterly uncoded, until 6.57, when despatched to Langar for mods, followed by remedial work at Waddington by CWP from Avro Bracebridge Heath. On completion 8.9.58 sent to 23MU and allotted to HQ FEAF 29.10.58. On arrival at Changi 10.11.58 VP291 was taken on 205 Sqn strength and coded F. To UK for spar modifications 19.3.60, returning to 205 Sqn on completion 15.12.60. In 3.62 was replaced by Mk 2 aircraft and flown to 23MU Aldergrove 5.4.62 for storage, arriving 9.4.62. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 5.8.64.

VP292 MR 1

First flown 12.7.51 and A/Cn 31.7.51. Delivered to 38MU Llandow 10.8.51. Taken on charge by Kinloss 17.9.51, issued to 236 OCU 1.10.51 and subsequently coded C-S. Suffered Cat.3 flying accident 22.10.52, when undercarriage prematurely raised on take-off and starboard leg collapsed on landing. Repaired on site and returned to 236 OCU 1.53, remaining until 10.53, when sent for storage at 23MU. Returned to 236 OCU 6.54 until despatched to 49MU for mods 23.12.55. On completion 10.56 VP292 was stored at 23MU until issued to MOTU 5.2.57, still as S. To Langar 9.57 for mods followed by remedial work at Waddington by Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP. To 23MU 23.12.58 for further period of storage. Allotted to FEAF 21.8.59 and on arrival at Changi 29.8.59 was issued to 205 Sqn and coded B. Modified by 49MU 3.12.54 and the CCMC, St Mawgan. 7.1.55 to 12.2.55, when VP293 was returned to 206 Sqn. More mods 6.55, but remained with 206 Sqn, now coded A, until sent to Avro Langar 17.8.56 for conversion to T.4 standard. Completed 28.3.58, VP293 went to Waddington for remedial work by Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23MU 4.4.58 for storage. Returned to Avro Langar for modifications 2.4.62-8.2.63, when transferred to Waddington for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP. Delivered to 23MU 20.2.63 for storage. Purchased by MoA 6.1.64 and transferred to RAE Farnborough for trials work (see Chapter 12). Withdrawn from use at the RAE 23.5.75 and sold to the Strathallen Museum. Delivered 3.5.76. Subsequently broken up on site. Nose section preserved by Norman Thelwell and currently at Norwich Aviation Museum, Horsham St Faith.

VP294 MR 1

First flown 18.7.51 and A/Cn 31.7.51. To 38MU Llandow 10.8.51 and issued to 220 Sqn 17.9.51. Two days later transferred to 236 OCU and coded C-T. Remained until 13.3.53, when despatched to Gibraltar for 224 Sqn. Probably remained uncoded. Ferried to 38MU 22.5.53 for storage until 5.4.54, when despatched to RRE Defford on C(A) loan for initial Blue Silk doppler trials completed in conjunction with the A&AEE. VP294 was delivered to 23MU 9.7.54 and remained in storage until issued to 220 Sqn 25.6.57. Coded T-P (later P). Transferred to 206 Sqn 14.1.58, but on 13.3.58 went to 49MU for fitment of weather reconnaissance equipment and on completion was delivered to 269 Sqn 10.4.58 for operations from Christmas Island. On return to the UK the aircraft was transferred to MOTU 12.11.58 and coded U. Allotted to FEAF 1.7.59 and issued to 205 Sqn five days later at Changi, where it was coded N. VP294 soon returned to the UK, going into storage at 23MU 2.12.59. To 5MU for repainting before delivery to MOTU 7.9.60, but 12 days later was reallocated to FEAF and rejoined 205 Sqn, still as N. Force-landed at Gan 15.5.62 and damaged beyond repair. SoC Cat.5(Components) 18.5.62.

Transferred to 269 Sqn 3.1.52, still as B-H, and moved with unit to Ballykelly 14.3.52. Returned to 38MU 18.9.53 for storage until issued to 236 OCU 11.1.55. Cat.4 damage resulting from a wheels-up landing 25.1.55 was repaired on site by CWP. The aircraft was transferred to Avro Langar for conversion to T.4 standard. On completion sent to Waddington for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP remedial action before delivery to 23MU 13.6.57. Despatched to MOTU 10.7.57 and coded V. Cat.2 damage 20.8.57 was repaired on site and WB819 remained with MOTU until 18,9.64, when transferred to Kinloss Station Flight, presumably for temporary storage, for it was back with MOTU 26.4.65 still coded V. Flown to Stansted 14.6.68 for the Fire School and SoC the same day. Subsequently burnt at Stansted.

Transferred lo 269 Sqn 3.1.52 and moved with the unit to Ballykelly 14.3.52, still as B-F. Underwent 'special fitment' 8.55, but remained with 269 Sqn, now uncoded, until 29.8.58. Delivered to 23MU for storage and stripping prior to despatch to Avro for conversion to T.4 standard 8.9.60. The work was probably completed by AWA at Bitteswell. On completion probably stored at 23MU Aldergrove, but definitely back on MOTU strength by 8.62, recoded T and moved with unit to St Mawgan 7.65. Withdrawn from use and declared Cat.5(Components) 2.4.68, when replaced by a Shackleton T.2. Towed to fire practice area (Trebelzue) and burnt by 8.68.

Cat.3 flying accident 15.8.58, when the starboard undercarriage leg collapsed on landing. Repaired on site, WB824 returned to MOTU 6.11.58. To 23MU 9.6.59 for storage until declared NEA and sold as scrap 3 1 .5.62.

WB825 MR 1A

First flown 31.8.51 and delivered to 38MU 19.9.51. Issued to 220 Sqn 24.10.51 and coded TM. Suffered Cat.3 damage 7.10.52, when struck by Wellington LN746 at Tangmere. WB825 was repaired on site, remaining on 220 Sqn strength. 'Special fitments' made 11.54 and 2.56, and during 10.57 the aircraft was despatched to Avro Langar for mods, transferring to Waddington for remedial work by Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23MU 3.10.58. Allotted to FEAF and issued to 205 Sqn at Changi 29.12.58 and coded H. Into storage at Seletar 7.3.61 and SoC Cat.5 (Components) 8.8.61. Scrapped at Seletar.

Returned to 236 OCU 31.12.54, remaining on strength as M after unit name change to MOTU 10.56. Despatched to 23MU for storage 7.4.60 and declared NEA. Sold as scrap 31.5.62.

Moved to St Mawgan with unit 7.65 and recoded U 10.65. Crashed on takeoff at St Mawgan 17.5.67 and damaged beyond economical repair. WB833 MR 2 Prototype

Removed from MR I production line and rebuilt to Mk 2 standard as the prototype under Contract 6/ Acft/5834/CB6(a). First flown 17.6.52 at Woodford and delivered to A&AEE Boscombe Down 23.7.52 for trials that covered performance, engineering, radio and navigation assessment To RAE Fazrnborough 2.12.52 for radio compass tests, and to Woodford 29.1.53 for CS(A) performance tests. Transferred to Langar 30.11.54 for Tl work, which culminated in Phase I (Mods 600 and 674) development. To A&AEE 21.2.58 for clearance of radio installation, revised cockpit layout and lighting followed by RAF Handling Squadron appraisal. Returned to Langar 1.10.58 for Phase 11 radio and radar installation (Mod 771) and contractor's flight trials. To A&AEE 22.9.59 for flight performance tests of Mod 771. Approval for aircraft to go to the RAE on 10.11.59 for dem onstration of sonobuoy system to American and Canadian personnel, the trials continuing at Boscombe on return. Air sea rescue gear dropping clearance also completed before WB833 was transferred to ASWDU at Ballykelly 17.11.60 for service trials. Coded B. Sustained Cat.3 damage 28.3.62, repaired on site by Avro CWP 8.5.6220.6.62. Further Cat.3 damage repaired by 23MU personnel 210.10.62, the aircraft remaining with ASWDU until reallocated to HSA 15.5.64 for update to Phase 111 standard. On completion 30.9.66 WB833 was retained by HSA for TI of Mods 1348 and 1403. Despatched to Ballykelly 16.12.66 and allocated to 210 Sqn, coded T. Transferred to Ballykelly Wing 2.67 still as T, and crashed in bad visibility on the Mull of Kintyre 19.4.68. SoC Cat.5 the same day.

Remained with Squadron until despatched to Avro Langar 28.3.56 for conversion to T.4 standard. On completion ferried to Waddington for remedial action by Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23MU 1.8.57. To MOTU 26.8.57 and coded H. Delivered to de Havilland Chester (Hawarden) 19.2.61 and on completion returned to MOTU 8.61 still as H. Suffered a Cat.3 flying accident 21.3.62, the damage being repaired on site. Despatched to 23MU 8.56 for further storage until 3.58, when ferried to MOTU for two months. Back with 23MU 20.5.58 until sent to Avro Langar 18.10.60 for T.4 conversion. Completed 1.62, WB845 returned to MOTU 2.62 and was transferred with unit to St Mawgan 7.65 still as X. To 27MU Shawbury 5.7.68 as NEA and placed in open storage. Sold 12.3.69 as scrap.

WB846 MR 1A

First flown 14.11.51 and A/Cn 30.11.51. To 38MU 12.12.51 and issued to 224 Sqn 5.2.52, becoming B-P. Transferred to 120 Sqn 30.8.54 and recoded A-G. To MOTU 29.10.56, retaining G code until withdrawn from use 26.3.58. Allocated as a ground instructional airframe with MOTU Kinloss and re-serialled 7561M. Scrapped at Kinloss.

WB847 MR 1A/T.4

First flown 20.1 1.51 and A/Cn 30.1 1.51. Ferried to 38MU 20.12.51 and placed in storage until prepared for issue to 236 OCU. Coded C-J on arrival at Kinloss 11.3.52. To Avro Langar 22.8.56 for T.4 conversion. being ferried to Waddington for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23MU 13.2.58. Prepared for issue to MOTU and on arrival 2.58 was coded N. Underwent Phase Il mods at AWA Bitteswell 4.60 - 11.60, returning to MOTU still as N. Transferred to St Mawgan with unit 7.65 and recode Z 7.66. Withdrawn from use 6.68 and allotted maintenance serial 8020M 5.6.68 (ntu). Intended as Kinloss 'gate guardian' but placed on fire dump 12.3.69 and scrapped.

WB848 MR 1A

First flown 25.1 1.51 and A/Cn 21.12.51. Ferried to 38 MU 28.12.51 and issued to 236 OCU 26.2.52, receiving code C-K. Recoded K on change of unit name to MOTU 10.56. To 240 Sqn 19.9.57, but despatched to 23MU 1().1.58 for LTS. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 23.10.63.

WB849 MR 1A/T.4

First flown 28.1 1.51 and A/Cn 28.12.52. To 38MU 11.1.52 and issued to the Joint Anti-Submarine School (JASS) Flight at Ballykelly 18.3.52. Coded G-W, WB849 remained on strength until 27.4.55, when transferred to 120 Sqn as A-B. To MOTU 31.10.56 as J. To 23MU 1.4.60 for STS prior to delivery to Avro Langar 4.8.60 for conversion to T.4 standard. Completed 9.61, the aircraft was ferried to Kinloss for MOTU 10.61 and recoded Z. Transferred to St Mawgan with unit 7.65 and a year later recoded O. Withdrawn from use when replaced by a T.2 7.68. Allotted to 27MU Shawbury 17.7.68, but move cancelled and WB849 was flown to Newton 30.7.68. Declared Cat.5(GI) on arrival and allocated maintenance serial 8026M.

WB850 MR 1A

First flown 8.12.51 and A/Cn 31.12.51. Ferried to 38MU 11.1.52 and prepared for the JASS Flight. Delivered 26.3.52 and coded G-X on arrival at Ballykelly. To 240 Sqn 13.12.54 and coded L-J initially (later uncoded). To 204 Sqn 5.6.58, but despatched to 23MU 17.12.58 for LTS. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 29.5.63.

Issued to 220 Sqn 15.8.57 and coded R. To 206 Sqn 14.1.58, 269 Sqn 29.5.58 and 204 Sqn 11.11.58 before joining ASWDU 23.11 .59 and coded B. Despatched to 23MU Aldergrove 18.3.60 and languished in storage until declared NEA and sold as scrap 28.2.63.

To CCMC 18.4.55 for Autolycus mods, returning to 269 Sqn. Received Cat.2 damage 13.12.57 when sonobuoy streamed from bomb-bay. To 23MU 7.1.58 and declared NEA. Sold as scrap 29.5.63.

To MOTU 29.10.56 and recoded F, remaining with the unit until expiry of spar life 13.10.58, when despatched to 23MU for LTS. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 29.5.63.

To Avro Langar 2.57 for modification to T.4 standard. Conversion abandoned. but latest MR 1 mods completed and WB854 ferried to Waddington for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23MU 10.6.58. Allocated to FEAF 26.6.58 and ToC by 205 Sqn, Changi 14.7.58 receiving code C. To UK 20.2.60 for wing-spar modifications, which were commenced by Avro 16.3.60. Completed 9.60. WB854 was back with 205 Sqn 1.10.60. Withdrawn from use following replacement by Mk 2 aircraft and SoC Cat.5(Components) in Singapore 27.11.62. Presumably broken up at Seletar.

Returned to 240 Sqn 10.9.52 and despatched to 49MU for Grapple mods 11.55. Back with 240 Sqn 5.12.55, but to 23MU 25.2.56 for investigation of suspected cracked main spar. Checks continued at 49MU Colerne, WB857 finally returning to 240 Sqn 28.1.57. To 204 Sqn 25.4.58, but loaned to 269 Sqn 7.58 - 10.58 for 'Grapple' detachment. Despatched to Avro for investigation and rectification of fatigue problems 7.12.58, the aircraft returning to 204 Sqn 30.9.59. To 27MU 27.11.59 for open storage and sold as scrap 31.5.62.

First flown 29.1.52 and ferried to 38MU 27.2.52. Issued to 240 Sqn 1.5.52 and moved with unit from St Eval to Ballykelly 6.6.52 coded L-A. To 23MU 11.6.53 and stored until delivered to 236 OCU 22.2.55 and coded C-U. Retained U code on unit name change 10.56, remaining until loaned to A&AEE Boscombe Down 26.8.59 for armament trials and clearance of modified Lindholme rescue gear. The tests were completed 21.10.59 and WB858 returned to MOTU 30.10.59, still as U. Despatched to Avro Langar 31.8.60 for conversion to T.4 standard and used for manufacturer's trials of Mods 920, 955, 980, 985 and 990 against Contract KD/L/047/CB6(a) until 11.61. To MoA Air Fleet 1.12.61, remaining on loan to Avro Langar until delivered to the A&AEE Boscombe Down 24.7.62 for temperate-zone trials of Mods 990, 1012 and 1013. To 23MU 24.8.62 for storage. Again used briefly by the A&AEE during 1963 for tests on the Marconi radio compass, returning to 23MU 11.8.63 after a short attachment to ASWDU at Ballykelly. Issued to MOTU 10.4.64 and coded M. Transferred with unit to St Mawgan 7.65, remaining until withdrawn from use and despatched to 27MU Shawbury 12.7.68 as NEA. Sold as scrap 3.2.69 to B.A. Taylor Ltd.

Moved with unit from St Eval to Ballykelly 6.6.52, remaining with 240 Sqn (latterly uncoded) until 1.11.58, when the unit was renumbered 203 Sqn. To 23MU 18.2.59 and placed in open storage. Sold as scrap 25 9.63.

First flown 7.2.52 and A/Cn 29.2.52. Ferried to 38MU 12.3.52 and issued to 240 Sqn 1.5.52. To Ballykelly with unit 6.6.52 coded L-C. 'Grapple' mods completed by 49MU 10.56 11.56, by which time probably uncoded. To 269 Sqn 6.58 - 10.58 for Grapple and transferred to 203 Sqn I .11.58 when 240 Sqn renumbered. Moved to 204 Sqn 27.1.59, still uncoded, and was despatched to 23MU 18.3.60 following complete re-equipment with MR 2.s. Placed in open storage as NEA and sold as scrap 28.2.63.

WB861 MR 1A

First flown 20.2.52 and A/Cn 4.3.52. Delivered to 38 MU 14.3.52 and issued to 240 Sqn 6.5.52 at St Eval, coded L-D. To Ballykelly with unit 6.6.52. To 49MU Colerne 25.6.56 for Grapple mods. On return to Ballykelly remained with 240 Sqn until 'written off' in a wheels-up landing during a circuit detail 5.9.57. SoC Cat.5(Components) 6.9.57.

Transferred to 203 Sqn 1.11.58, when unit renumbered, as E. To 23MU 18.2.59 for open storage as NEA and scrapped 31.5.62.

To 38MU 16.4.52 and issued to 240 Sqn 4.6.52 Coded L-F, WG508 moved from St Eval to Ballykelly with unit 6.6.52, but returned 20.10.52, when the aircraft joined the newly formed 206 Sqn as B-X. To 220 Sqn 2.7.54 and recoded T-L. Returned to 206 Sqn 7.11.56 as H. Despatched to 23MU 1.4.58 and sold as scrap 29.5.63.

WG509 MR 1A

First flown 13.3.52 and A/Cn 8.4.52. Ferried to 38MU 16.4.52 and issued to 240 Sqn 4.6.52, becoming L-G. To Ballykelly with unit 6.6.52. To 49MU Colerne for Grapple mods 15.11.56 and on completion 12.56 returned to 240 Sqn until withdrawn from use 28.11.58 and flown to 23MU for open storage. Sold as scrap 25.9.63.

WG510 MR 1A

First flown 30.3.52 and A/Cn 25.4.52. Delivered to 38MU 29.4.52 and issued to 42 Sqn 2.7.52 and coded A-F. Transferred to 206 Sqn 15.5.54 and recoded B-U. Recoded B 8.54 and sent to CCMC St Mawgan 27 - 30.4.55 for completion of Autolycus installation. Remained with 206 Sqn until despatched to 23MU 2.12.57 for storage. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 28.2.63.

WG511 MR 1A/T.4

First flown 7.4.52 and A/Cn 30.4.52. Delivered to 38MU 7.5.52 and prepared for issue. To 42 Sqn 9.6.52 and initially coded A-A1, soon changed to A-A. Transferred to 120 Sqn 24.2.53 and recoded A-J. To 49MU Colerne 4.55 for Autolycus 'special fitment', followed by completion at St Mawgan by the CCMC 25 - 26.4.55, when sent to 23MU for storage until issued to Avro Langar 25.5.56 for conversion to T.4 standard. On completion 7.57 the aircraft was ferried to Waddington for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23MU 7.8.57. Prepared for MOTU and delivered 26.8.57. Coded O. CWP mods at Kinloss 6.59. Ferried to DH Chester (Hawarden) on 31.8.60 for Phase II mods. Returned to MOTU 18.5.61 still as O. Withdrawn from use and declared Cat.5(Components) 26.7.66. SoC 3.8.66 and nose section converted by 71MU Bicester for exhibition use 1968-1971. To RAF Museum 8.74 and later sold to the Cornwall Aero Park, Helston, as an exhibit. Current.

WG525 MR 1A

First flown 18.4.52 and A/Cn 7.5.52. Ferried to 38MU 9.5.52 and issued to 42 Sqn 16.6.52, subsequently coded A-B. Transferred to 220 Sqn 1.7.54 and recoded T-P. To Avro Langar 5.57 for mods. On completion ferried to Waddington for Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery into storage at 23MU 30.7.58. Allocated to FEAF 17.9.58 and ToC by 205 Sqn at Changi 29.9.58 with code E. Overshot landing at Gan 11.1.60 after propeller rack bolt failure. Repaired on site and returned to UK 24.5.60 for wing-spar remedial work. Redelivered to 205 Sqn 28.12.60 and remained with unit until replaced by Mk2. Ferried to UK, arriving at 23MU 24.5.62 for open storage as NEA. Sold as scrap 5.8.64.

WG526 MR 1A

p>First flown 6.5.52 and A/Cn 30.5.52. To 38MU 4.6.52 and issued to 42 Sqn 23.6.52. Coded A-C. Transferred to 206 Sqn 1.7.54 and recoded B-C (later C). To CCMC St Mawgan 1.55 for completion of Autolycus installation returning to 206 Sqn 25.1.55. To 220 Sqn 7.11.56 and recoded N, Suffered Cat.3 flying accident 15.1.57, when port undercarriage leg collapsed during crosswind landing. Repaired on site, WG526 remained with 220 Sqn until 11.57, when despatched to Avro Langar for mods. Ferried to Waddington for remedial work by Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP before delivery to 23MU 18.3.59 for storage. To MOTU 15.9.59 as T until sent to ASWDU 22.6.61 and SoC Cat.5(Scrap) 11.7.61.

 

WG527 MR 1A/T.4

First flown 15.5.52 and A/Cn 30.5.52. To 38MU 4.6.52 and issued to 42 Sqn 2.7.52. Coded A-D until transfer to 206 Sqn 1.7.54, when recoded B-D (later D). To Avro Langar 18.7.56 for conversion to T.4 standard, going to Waddington on completion for remedial work by Avro Bracebridge Heath CWP. Delivered to 23MU 26.11.57 and prepared for service. To MOTU 12.12.57 and coded K. Underwent 'special fitment' installation 5.59 and CWP mods 6.59, but remained with MOTU until 3.11.61, when sent to DH Chester (Hawarden) for Phase 11 mods. Returned to MOTU 21.5.62 and recoded P. Cat.3 flying accident 5.2.64 was repaired on site and WG527 was back with MOTU 5.64. Transferred to St Mawgan with unit 7.65. Further Cat.3 flying accident 17.7.67, which was also repaired on site, the aircraft remaining with MOTU until withdrawn from use and despatched to 27MU Shawbury 19.4.68 for open storage as NEA. Sold as scrap 12.3.69.

WG528 MR 1A

First flown 18.5.52 and A/Cn 30.6.52. To 38MU 8.7.52 and prepared for issue. To 42 Sqn 18.7.52 and coded A-G. Transferred to 206 Sqn 13.10.52 and recoded B-V (changed to B-E 7.54). To 23MU 13.2.58 for storage. Declared NEA and sold as scrap 29.5.63.

WG529 MR 1A

First flown 24.6.52 and A/Cn 16.7.52. To 38MU 18.7.52 and issued to 42 Sqn 15.8.52, becoming A-H. Suffered Cat.3 flying accident 30.11.53, when pilot accidentally raised the undercarriage during 'downwind' circuit checks and landed at night 'wheels up'. Repaired on site, WG529 was transferred on completion l5.5.54 to 206 Sqn and recoded B-X (changed to B-F 7.54). Remained with 206 Sqn until 15.12.57, when despatched to 240 Sqn. Uncoded at Ballykelly. To 23MU 21.8.58 for storage, the aircraft being declared NEA and broken up during 1962. Sold as scrap 25.11.63.
